Submission Guidelines for Articles in English
( Instructions to Authors )
1. Herbal Formula Science publishes issues quarterly(February 28, May 31, August 31, November 30).
2. Criteria for Submission
The journal of Herbal Formula Science is the official journal of The Korean Medicine Society For The Herbal Formula Study. The instruction to authors follow the 『Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals: Writing and Editing for Biomedical Publication』and the details not stated on the following shall follow the general rule of above form.
1)-1. Qualifications for Contribution
The qualification of contributor shall be a member of The Korean Medicine Society for the Herbal Formula Study as a general rule. But it can be submitted if they conducted the joint research with a member of this society, or received the recommendation of the council member of this society.
1)-2. Types of Manuscript
The Korean Medicine Society for the Herbal Formula Study related original articles, reviews, clinical and case reports or brief reports, etc shall be published on our journal.
1)-3. Publication Status of Manuscript and Publication Order
All manuscripts will be determined whether to be published by going through deliberation of editorial board, after being reviewed by a number of reviewers requested by editorial board. The publication order of accepted manuscript will be in the order of kinds and submitting date of manuscript as a general rule.
1)-4. Duplicate Publication and Unauthorized Publication
The manuscript with same details in same language as the ones published in other academic journals or periodic publications already, cannot be contributed and the manuscript published in our journal cannot be reproduced voluntarily at other places.
1)-5. Review Fee and Publication Fee
A designated review fee and publication fee can be charged for all manuscripts except requested manuscripts. The designing fee or cost required for special printing must be paid by author for its actual expenses. And in case of desiring additional reprints, it’s number of copies should be written by red color on the cover of manuscript while the expenses required for the productions shall be paid separately by the authors.
1)-6. Statement of Human Right
The confidentiality of patients must be protected in case of human subjects are involved. Recording name, chart number and precise date should be avoided and one must be careful not to expose patient status.
1)-7. Role of Editorial Board
Various inquiries related to sending and editing manuscript must be perform at the editorial board, the editorial board may request corrections to author on style and length of manuscript and the expressions or system, etc may be corrected within the range of not influencing the manuscript by the decision of editorial board. All manuscript are not returned after being submitted.
The copyrights of all published manuscripts are owned by The Korean Medicine Society for the Herbal Formula Study.
2) Journal Publication and Submitting of manuscript
Our journal is published 4 times per year (February 28, May 31, August 31, November 30). Manuscript received by editorial board at all times throughout the year. The submitting date of manuscript shall be the date manuscript was submitted at the editorial board and the selection of manuscript shall be the date when the corrections have been completed after reviewing.
2)-1. Peer Review
Every manuscript received is circulated to three peer reviewers. The author`s name and affiliation is not disclosed to reviewers during the review process. The review process can be repeated three times if the request for revision is suggested by the reviewers. If the re-review is repeated more than three times, it may not be considered for publication. If two reviewers do not agree to accept the manuscript, it may not be considered for publication. The first review process usually ends within one month.
3) Submission of Manuscript
3)-1. Submission Guideline
The accepted format for the word processing program is HWP and MS word DOC files(PDF files are not accepted). The manuscript should be prepared on A4 paper (210×297mm) with space of 30mm from the top, the bottom, right side and left side. Font size should be 10.0 points, row space 160%. Pages should be numbered in series from the title page. All paragraphs should be intented by 2 and it is not recommended to spacing typing with space bar in the beginning of paragraph. Other detailed instructions are as follows.
3)-2. Contribution Method
Authors should submit their manuscripts online via Article Contribution Management System (ACOMS). Online submission facilitates processing and reviewing of submitted articles, thereby substantially shortening the paper lifecycle from submission to publication. After checking the manuscript’s compliance to the Manuscript Guidelines, please follow the “e-Submission” hyperlink in the top navigation menu to begin the online manuscript submission process.
4) Length of manuscript
The length of manuscript shall be not exceeding 15 pages with A4(210×297mm) white paper. If the length of manuscript exeeds 15 pages, extra publication fee will be charged to the author. Only reviews article/editorial article and case report restrict within 10 pages with A4 white paper.
5) Organization Style of Manuscript
The article should be organized in the order of title page, abstract, key words, texts, acknowledgements, references, table, figure, legends (except for clinical & case report and reviews) while the text is divided into title, introduction, materials (subject) and method, result, discussions and conclusion (summary).
5)-1. Title Page
On the title page
①Brief Korean and English title communicating the contents well (All words must be capitalized except for prepositions and articles)
② Full name of authors in Korean and English(First authors comes first and co-authors follow)
③ Affiliation of authors
④ Funding support etc
⑤Name and address, etc of corresponding authors (Including Phone, Fax and E-mail address) should be written.
⑥When the Korean title exceeds 30 characters or English title exceeds 15 words, the running head should be inserted separately on the title page (No more than 10 characters in case of Korean and no more than 5 words in case of English).
The person listed on manuscript as the authors of thesis must be qualified as a authors. Each authors must be the person who has participated adequately in the research to the extent of being able to take responsibility for the details of research. The authors is qualified only in case of
①Contributing to establishing basic concept of research, experimental design and analysis & interpretation of data,
②Making considerable contribution in changing or improving main parts of indicated details or preparing msnuscript,
③ being able to consent to the details of final msnuscript.
Authors are classified as ⓐthe first author ⓑcorresponding author and ⓒco-authors while the order marked on thesis shall be in the order of first author and co-authors, but the corresponding author is marked separately at the bottom. The editor may inquire as to what work each author was in charge of in the research.
All manuscripts should contain an abstract written in English. In the abstract, English title, name of authors (in the order of first name-last name), name of organization and details of abstract while the length of details shall be no more than 250 words in case of English abstract. The abstract should be recorded in a form of Objectives, Methods, Results and Conclusions including the following details.
①Objectives : Describe briefly and clearly with 1-2 sentences on why this research was performed and what is the object to be accomplished. The objective recorded here must correspond with title of draft and details stated in the introduction.
②Methods : Describe specifically on what has been done and how in order to accomplish the objective describe in the first paragraph. What materials are collected, how these materials are analyzed and how bias was adjusted are recorded.
③Results : The details on how the results observed and analyzed using the method described in previous paragraph were should be logically described while presenting specific data.
④Conclusions : The result derived from the outcome of this research is described with 1-2 sentences and this must be the one corresponding to the objective of research described in the first paragraph.
The key words of manuscript should be shown as no more than 6 words at the bottom of abstract. At this time, the key words must use MeSH (Medical Subject Heading) listed on Index Medicus. When the word is oriental medicine terminology, oriental medicine prescription name or name of acupuncture, record by referring to WHO-IST and WHO international standard for acupuncturing parts.

5)-4. Main Text
The main text should be in the order of introduction, subject or material and method, consideration, conclusion and bibliography while each item can be combined or omitted out of necessity. In the introduction, the objective of research and a brief background on this must be mentioned. The method should include subject such as animals for experiment, methods, experiment devices (state manufacturer and model) and procedure, etc while they must be described adequately and in detail for other researchers to reproduce in case of being performed using the same method and the statistical examination of result must be also recorded. The result should be recorded in the same order as the order of diagrams but must not write the table of text or data of illustration by repetition while only the important observation results should be emphasized and summarized. The consideration should be prepared based on new and important aspects of research as well as the conclusion from them, but the literary consideration irrelevant with result should be avoided.
①Terminology : Academic terminologies should be in Korean if possible and can be written in English or Chinese only in case there is trouble with translating them.
②Abbreviation : Only standard abbreviations are used. Avoid use of abbreviations in thesis title and abstract. While using the abbreviation for the first time in the test, mark the abbreviation using parentheses, etc after writing the formal name first and can be only marked as abbreviation afterwards. While it is ideal to avoid using abbreviations that are generally used if possible, but the abbreviations of standard measuring unit is an exception.
③Marking proper nouns, numbers and measurements : name of people name of places and other proper nouns should use original language if possible while the arabian numbers are used for numbers and metric units are used for weights and measures. The temperature is recorded in Celsius and blood pressure is recorded in mmHg. The measurements of hematology and clinical chemistry should use metric units of SI (International System of Units) method. The measured values and unit indications must be spaced.
④Name of drug : Use general name rather than product name as a general rule. But the product name can be used only in case it is important for evaluation of result or tracking research.
a.The herbal prescription should be written by Romanized Korean name first and the Chinese pinyin name should be parenthesized. And words that stand for Words that ingredients such as tang, san or hwan should be indicated by lower case letters after using the hyphen(-).
b.The name of oriental medicine must not be marked only with name of herbal medicine and the actually used part or measuring method must be marked with proper English.

⑤ Category Classification
The categories of text are classified with below two types.
a. In Korean, the text is classified with Arabic numerals

b. In English, the text is classified with roman numerals
〔Ex〕Ⅰ,Ⅱ,Ⅲ, 1, 2, 3, a, b, c
5)-5. Figure, Table
The title of Figure, Table should be written in English while the same rule applies for legends in the table. The title of table should be capitalized except for prepositions and articles. The table should be prepared without inserting horizontal or vertical lines. A number and brief title should be attached to the table according to the order quoted in the text while the title cannot use abbreviations as a general rule. The explanation on category is inserted to footnote and not inserted to heading. Non-standard abbreviations used in tables are all explained in footnotes. In footnote, symbols are used for explanations and they are used in the following order : *,†,‡,§,∥,¶,**,++,‡‡. Table & Figure are placed in order after the text and their location is indicated in the text. The legend is written in English as a general rule, but only the first word is capitalized and the rest is marked with lower case letters. The figure must be submitted with onces that are clearly prepared as professional design, should show arrows indicating the top, name of author and serial number on the back and the title or explanation of all figures should be written at once on a separate page. Tables or figures (including photographs) shall be no more than 10 all together and the exceeding expenses should be paid by the author in avoidable cases. In case the author requests colored figures, the expenses shall be paid by the author.
The authors have responsibility to check whether the reference included in the manuscript is quoted precisely and completely. All references are prepared in English as a general rule. The reference should be organized by putting serial numbers according to the order quoted in the text, indicate by putting into half-parenthesis as Arabic numeral in a form of superscript number at the end of quoted phrase, but should be written by corresponding with serial number of reference at the end. Six authors can be listed. If more than 6 authors are listed only list 6 names with `et al`. English names of author should be written as last name first and the rest should be initialized. And the number of references should be 40 or less in case of original article as a general rule. The style of reference is as follows.
①Original articles : Name of autor. title. name of iournal. published year;volume(issue no.):starting page-ending page.

Write last name first and write initials for the rest in case of having 6 or less writer while writing 6 people in order and mark et al. in case of having 7 or more writer. Next, write the title of thesis, name of academic paper based on abbreviation, publishing year, volume (number) and first page & last page of corresponding thesis.

Even in case of Korean books, reference information should be provided in English as a general rule and the reference information can use parentheses. But the case in which English writing is difficult can be can exception.

General details shall be according to Original Article.
6)-1. Reviews Article/Editorial Article
Review articles is consideration focused on specific title and published by requesting at the editing committee.
6)-2. Case report
① The entire amount shall be prepared as 10 pages or less of A4 sized paper
②The composition of the thesis shall be accord to the Original Artcle. The order of text should be A. Title, Author (Organization, Name); B. English Abstract and Key Words (2 to 5)Case; C. Introduction; D. Case; E. Consideration; F. Summary; G. Acknowledgements; H. Reference; I. Table; J: Figure.
③ English abstract and summary shall be no more than 150 words without classification of category.
④The consideration should be focused on specific part emphasized by the case and lengthy literary consideration should be avoided.
⑤ The number of reference should be no more than 20.
6)-3. Clinical Image
The clinical image is to deliver the details through photographs and their explanation while this has the main purpose of education through photographs in contrast to the creative original article. The manuscript should be prepared within 1/2 page of A4 sized paper while the photo at the bottom of figure should be 4 or less and reference should be 5 or less.
General interest or personal opinions on specific trend of the field related to health should be described, the manuscript should be prepared within 4 pages of A4 sized paper and reference should be limited as 5 or less.
As the part written by getting comment request on specific thesis published on the journal, the opinion of academic society is not reflected. The raft should be prepared within 4 pages of A4 sized paper and reference should be limited as 10 or less.
6)-6. Continuing Education Column
Request is made related to the topic determined at the editing committee, the manuscript should be prepared within 4 pages of A4 sized paper and reference should be limited as 5 or less
6)-7. Letters to the Editor
Constructive criticism or opinion is described on specific thesis published on academic journal within 6 months, the draft should be prepared within 1 pages of A4 sized paper and reference should be limited as 5 or less.
3. Principles of Review
1)The editorial board reviews the suitability of topic, contents, and style of the submitted article; then, it requests three editors to review the article.
2)The editors shall make one of the following decisions after examining the article according to its topic, contents, and style, as based on the guidelines of the review criteria: accept (A); minor revision (B); major revision (C); and reject (D).
3) The editors shall clearly and precisely describe the reasons for C and D decisions.
4)The editorial board summarizes the editors' decisions and makes final judgments according to the following principle.
AAC･ABB･ABC･BBB･BBC : Minor revision
AAD･ABD･ACD･ACC･BBD･BCC･CCC : Major revision
ADD･BCD･BDD･CCD･CDD･DDD : Reject
5)If the article is rejected for publication, the author can request a re-examination with reasonable arguments against the editors' decisions. If the editorial board holds that the re-examination request is reasonable, it can ask other editors to review the article. However, the author cannot further argue against the results of re-examination.
6) The editorial board will determine the publication of book reviews and introduction to materials.
7) When providing review requests and decisions, the editorial board makes the authors and editors anonymous.
8) The authors should respect the editors' decisions of amendment.
4. Publication ethics
1)For the policies on the research and publication ethics not stated in this instructions, International standards for editors and authors (http:publicationethics.org/international-standards-editors-and-authors) can be applied.
2)In case of suspected or alleged misconduct, we will follow the COPE flowcharts and may also seek advice at the COPE forum.
